Mark your calendars for the 2ND ANNUAL
“MAKING THE GRADE – RUN FOR EDUCATION”
on Sunday, September 16, 2012

Back by popular demand!
This fun family event, held at the El Dorado Hills Golf Course, includes professionally-timed 5k and 10k run/walks, and one-mile and half-mile youth runs.

New this year, the Buckeye Family Fun Festival will be held following the races, featuring food vendors, bounce houses, music, games and activities organized by volunteers from each of the seven elementary and middle schools in the Buckeye Union School District.

Register today for the race at www.buckeyefoundation.org/events. The first 100 registered will receive goodie bags. All children ages 12 and under participating in the 1 mile and ½ mile fun runs will collect a medal for participation. The school boasting the most number of race participants will be awarded the “You Made the Grade” event banner to display on campus.

Tickets for the Buckeye Family Fun Festival will be sold at each of the seven schools as well as at local businesses and at the event. Volunteers from each of the schools are still needed to help organize the Festival. Please contact
info@buckeyefoundation.org to volunteer or for more details on the event.

All proceeds benefit the Buckeye Education Foundation. For more information or to get involved as a volunteer, visit our redesigned website at www.buckeyefoundation.org. Stop by the Foundation table at Back to School Night and sign up for email alerts to stay current on Foundation news. April 2012
School Start Time and Transportation Fee Increase Update
from David Roth, Buckeye Union Superintendent

Thank you to all who participated in the recent survey seeking input regarding the alignment of school start times in 2012-2013 and an increase to transportation fees.  There were over 1320 parent responses and more than 280 employee responses.

On the issue of increasing transportation fees by $25.00 per year, eighty-three percent of parents who responded to the survey and whose children use transportation approved of the idea. The Superintendent anticipates bringing forth this information and recommending the fee increase at the May 2nd School Board Meeting.

On the issue of changing school start times, some parents commented that changing school start times would impose a significant impact on work schedules, raise daycare costs, and disrupt family time.  These comments were particularly true of parents who preferred an 8:00 a.m. start time. The District realizes that these are difficult times for many families and has decided not to proceed with changing any school start times for 2012-2013.

Information coming from State Budget conversations continues to make it increasingly unclear as to how much of our transportation funding will ultimately be cut. We may not know, with certainty, until November when voters decide on the fate of any tax initiatives that support funding of public education. In the meantime, we will be examining other means of cost saving, including consolidation of administrative services in transportation with other Districts.

Again, thank you to all who completed the survey. Your input is a valuable part of the decision making process.

Sincerely,

David Roth, Ph.D.

Superintendent

Buckeye Union School District
